Becoming a professional and craftsperson of Cornish hedging

Our courses in Cornish hedging can lead to a career in Cornish hedge building and repair in Cornwall. For those who wish to become professional Cornish hedgers, we recommend progressing to an advanced certificate in Cornish hedging as a way of attaining evidence of a good standard of craftsmanship.

Attaining an advanced certificate ensures that trainees have gained significant experience and have been assessed to both a quality standard and professional work-pace. An advanced certificate also allows trainees to apply to become a Craftsperson of the Guild of Cornish Hedgers, indicating to employers and customers a high quality of Cornish hedging. They also have the directory of Cornish hedgers where many potential customers look for their hedging professionals.

2 day LANTRA Introductory Course
£340 per person 

Our two day introductory course is ideal for anyone who wants to learn the basics. Over the two days, trainees will be practically engaged in learning the fundamentals of the Cornish hedge and applying what they learn.

This course is aimed at giving trainees the confidence to embark on further training and gain useful skills, but it is also ideal for anyone who wants to engage with the landscape via Cornish hedges, volunteers who maintain hedges and land-owners who are considering maintaining their own hedges.

5 day LANTRA Foundation Course

The 5 day foundation course in Cornish hedging is the ideal entry point for learning how to build Cornish hedges. It is suitable for those with no experience of hedging and those with some informal or self-taught experience. We deliver this training in a variety of locations and disciplines with the aim of trainees leaving the five days with a level of capability in Cornish hedging that they can build upon to become a craftsperson, or use in the context of their own land or in volunteering roles.

This course is ideal for aspiring Cornish hedgers, rangers, volunteers, those who wish to incorporate hedging into their current practical career, land-owners and those who would like to build upon the basics.

10 day LANTRA Intermediate Course
£1,200 

The ten day intermediate course is aimed at those who have enough experience of Cornish hedging to know that they are capable of achieving a high standard of Cornish hedging at the end of the ten days and can pass an assessment of a test piece to gain an intermediate certificate.

This course is most useful to those who are on the Craftsperson’s path to be able to offer Cornish hedging professionally or those who need to be able to build Cornish hedges to a higher standard for their own purposes.

If you’re looking to start a career in Cornish hedging, but would struggle to pay the cost of the training, we may be able to help you.

On each course that we deliver, we factor in some capacity for trainees who may require a bursary. Our sponsors, listed below, have kindly enabled us to offer a limited number of places which will be fully-funded or 50% subsidised for the learner, giving them a leg-up into a new career.

Our learning bursaries are aimed at those aged between 16 and 25 or those in financial hardship. To find out if you are eligible, just apply for the course you are interested in and let us know during the booking process that you would like a bursary. We will give you the assessment form which can qualify you for a sponsored place. Our trustees can award 50% or 100% of the training fee depending on your circumstances. A £25 membership contribution is applied as a one-off to all new bookings.
