Earlier this year, we repaired a section of hedge on Carne Farm by running two Introduction Courses with trainees. Now, we’d like to revisit the farm and take a good look at this and the other hedges, looking for signs of their historical uses, recording their features and wildlife. This farm has beautiful views and several historical intrigues from the Iron Age through to medieval. Carne Farm has a variety of hedges including huge stones and boulders, to smaller stones that have overgrown. We hope to have a fun day of learning about the things that hedges can tell us by their build and the life they support.
Please be sure to book both or one of these days by contacting us below – we have a limited capacity for how many people we can take on this farm.
Andrew Cockshaw and Cherish Maxwell from CREST will train volunteers on the day in everything they need to know for a fun and successful survey.
We’ll be embracing the winter, encouraging everyone to wrap up warm and bring their thermos as we take a good walk around several historic hedges on each farm. We’ll be sharing insights and stories from the farmers that tell us how these hedges were made, how they were used and any local folklore that feeds into our survey.

As you are driving over the moorland, you will get to a fork in the road, take the left which has both a granite and more modern sign post for Moravah (1 mile) and St Just (5 mile). Just behind the signs is the small Morvah Quoit. The first left after this is signposted with Carne Farm.
