The ancient land of Penwith in west Cornwall is crisscrossed with Cornish hedges. From prehistoric times up to the modern day, Cornish hedgers have worked with the stones that came to hand, giving a glimpse in to the exciting geology that lies beneath!
This walk will venture across the area around Bosigran on the north coast of Penwith. Whilst marvelling at the wonderful Cornish hedges, you will dig deeper below the surface for an insight in to Cornwall’s turbulent geological history. Learn how the last 400 million years has shaped the stunning Penwith landscape we see today, influenced industries through time, and, of course, provided us with these fantastic hedging stones.
Dr. Sam Hughes is a freelance geologist (Cornwall Geologist) with 15 years experience as a lecturer at Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter.
This fascinating and engaging guided walk will last approximately 2-3 hours. Free parking is available at the National Trust Carn Galver car park and nearby laybys (grid ref.: SW421364). The walk will commence from Carn Galver car park at 11 am.
