
Learn How to Carve a Granite Bird Bath
An Introduction to Stone Carving With Stephane Rouget

Location: Near Sancreed, West Cornwall
This workshop with sculptor and stonemason, Stéphane Rouget, aims to teach participants how to carve granite into a simple bird bath, or, if you’ve carved before, something more ornate. Over the course of the two days, you will shape local stone into a sturdy bowl that you can take away and keep working on or use immediately in your garden.
The course is aimed to be an introduction to carving granite and includes:
- Learning to use the staple tools of stone carving (the pitcher, the point and the chisel)
- Learning how to create a water-holding bowl in granite
- Learning how to texture granite for the finish you want
For beginners, this workshop aims to help trainees understand the beauty of granite and its versatility, opening the door to more advanced workshops later on. For more experienced learners, the workshop can push abilities with finish and texture possibilities.
Overall, the course will help participants to understand the specific nature of granite and its versatility, while discovering the endless possibilities that this stone provides.
This course is aimed at anyone wanting to try their hand at the craft who feels fit for 2 days of granite carving.
