Cornwall is host to a plethora of rock types distributed across the county, from granites to slates and even rocks from the mantle! They tell us a story of a long and turbulent geological past.

From ancient times up to the modern day, Cornish hedgers have developed styles of building to suit the local rock types. Working with the stones that came to hand in each area gave Cornwall its vast diversity of hedges and a way to glimpse the exciting geology that defines our landscape. Cornwall’s geology is the beginning of the story of the Cornish hedge.

This talk will venture through Cornwall’s geological history of plate tectonics, and how these rocks beneath our feet can tell us about a time when Cornwall was at the bottom of an ocean and then centre of a giant mountain range. Understand how the geological evolution over the last 400 million years has shaped the landscape around us today, influencing modern industries that define the county’s history, present day, and future.

Dr. Sam Hughes is a senior lecturer at Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter; this fascinating and engaging talk will last approximately 1 hour including a Q&A session.

*A limited number of bursary funded places are available for those in financial hardship.
